That second time was like, "Wow this is really amazing!"

The outcome was good and bad. I just want them to see that a more beautiful world exists beyond the confines of your environment. The dress was on the rack. SHERALD: I found a dress at a vintage store here in Baltimore City in a neighborhood called Hampden.

While Sherald was in the hospital, her younger brother was fighting a battle of his own with cancer. That's where the bonds are formed. “It’s what I wake up to do, I’m lost without it.”   In the hospital waiting for her new heart, she drew, did research for art, and joked with the nurses about her next piece being a tin woman.

It helps [for people] to have an object in front of them to talk about so they're not talking at each other, they're looking at it.

For me, it meant working smart and not hard. I can't say it was the impetus for my work because you go to graduate school, you gain a vocabulary, and the world becomes a different place.
